Balaton Airport is located within the Sármellék municipality - outside the southwestern city of Heviz on the edge of Lake Balaton. The distance between the city center and the airport is approximately 11 kilometers, between the airport and shores of Lake Balaton -18 kilometers. For the transfer to the resorts of Lake Balaton transfer buses are available and their timetable is adapted to flight times. In addition, inexpensive taxi is also available. The minibus with 8 seats offers a pleasant alternative to the sometimes busy bus cabin. Of course, there are also car rental services. The international airport code (IATA) of the Balaton Airport is SOB. The former Russian military airport has a runway with a length of 2500m and 60m width of concrete. Grass near the runway is not in sufficient conditions. An airport can handle 300 passengers per hour, which is about one landing per hour. The infrastructure does not yet meet the requirements for landing places; however, the operating company Cape Clear Aviation Ltd., an Irish-Hungarian consortium, is going to continuously increase the capacity, especially in the cargo area. The DHL has a separate logistic center here since the fall of 2007. The range of services will be continuously expanding. Meanwhile, in addition to Balaton Airport the second passenger airport in Hungary will be opened shortly.
Up to 9 different airlines such as Ryanair, Germanwings, HAMBURG international and Lufthansa are presented at Balaton Airport in the summer months. Thereby, German tourists have the possibility to get from several German airports directly to the Balaton airport. For example, Ryanair flies from Dusseldorf (Weeze) and Frankfurt (Hahn), Germanwings from Berlin (Schönefeld) and Cologne / Bonn, Hamburg international from Dresden or Leipzig. Depending on the airline, the flights are schedule as 2-3 flights per week. The fact that the budget airlines use this airport makes the entire Balaton region a popular holiday destination not only for young people and families, but also for seniors.
