Beach and family holidays

For easy beach days, the south shore is usually the most straightforward starting point. The water is often shallow, many towns have long bathing areas, and trains make short trips possible without driving. Siofok is lively, Balatonlelle and Balatonboglar are practical for families, and Fonyod or the western south shore can feel calmer.

Wellness, wine and quieter trips

If you want thermal baths, look toward Heviz, Zalakaros, Keszthely and West Balaton. If wine, views and walks are more important, the north shore around Balatonfured, Tihany, Badacsony, Szigliget and the Balaton Uplands is stronger. Spring, early summer and September are often better for cycling, hiking and relaxed town visits than the hottest weeks of July and August.
