Keszthely: Castle, Park and Lake Balaton Experiences
Accommodation in Keszthely
In Keszthely, many discoveries lie in the combination of castle history, green spaces and experiences on Lake Balaton. The exhibitions at Festetics Palace range from the former life of the Festetics family to a large model railway layout; in Helikon Park, the main path leads straight to the shore of Lake Balaton. There are also museums, a botanical garden and excursion boats. Which of these aspects interests you most can also help you choose the right place to stay.
Castle history and unusual exhibitions
Festetics Palace was continuously built and expanded from the mid-18th century onwards. It remained the property of the Festetics family for 200 years. An exhibition spanning more than 20 rooms tells the story of the family’s former aristocratic life. Another exhibition focuses on hunting, showcasing trophies from wild animal species hunted on five continents. Many animals are shown in depictions of their natural habitats.
The Historical Model Railway Exhibition offers a very different perspective on exhibition culture. A model layout covering 503 square metres features more than 2.7 kilometres of track and over 600 buildings. Interactive elements let visitors activate hidden scenes; a special camera locomotive transmits the view from a train driver’s perspective. The various exhibitions each have their own focus: aristocratic history, hunting displays and a richly detailed miniature world.
Green spaces, gardens and the city’s history
At 17 hectares, Helikon Park is the largest green space in the city. Its main path leads straight to the shore of Lake Balaton; the park is also home to the domed Helikon Monument. It was erected in 1921 to mark the centenary of the Helikon Festival and has become a landmark of Keszthely. This is separate from the park at Festetics Palace, which is a protected natural area and contains a palm house.
The Georgikon Botanical Garden also combines nature with a distinctive collection theme. The botanical garden covers 13 hectares and is notable for its extraordinary diversity of species. It is under local protection and houses a fig germplasm conservation collection from the Balaton Uplands, described as unique in the region. In the city centre, meanwhile, listed Baroque and historicist buildings shape the pedestrian zone. The Szigetfürdő regained its 19th-century appearance in several phases of construction during the second half of the 2000s; inside, it meets modern standards.
Museums, an adventure farm and time on the water
The Balatoni Museum displays approximately 10,000 exhibits across more than 700 square metres. Interactive games and other surprises complement the exhibition. Those looking to include different types of activities in their travel plans can also visit the adventure farm at the Georgikon MajortörtĂ©neti KiállĂtĂłhely in Keszthely. It includes a petting zoo, a play barn, a plant exhibition, a playground and a baking area.
Excursion boats, including the Helka, depart from Keszthely’s distinctive pier for shorter cruises. It is worth checking the timetable in advance for these trips. Sailing is also possible; Keszthely additionally offers sailing lessons and boat rentals, including for complete beginners. Those wishing to combine culture and activity can consider these options alongside exhibitions and walks as separate elements of their stay. When choosing accommodation, it may therefore help to first consider whether the castle and museums, green spaces or activities on the water will play the biggest part in your trip.
