Surfing Vacation at Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is an excellent spot for surfers. The "Hungarian Sea" is the largest lake in Central and Western Europe. The lake is 74 kilometers long and up to 10 kilometers and windsurfers will have a chance to catch really strong wind. Season begins with the spring winds in March. Then the first surfers and sailors start to appear and it lasts almost until the New Year – surfers use wetsuits to protect against the cold. The official surfing season at Balaton lasts from early April until the end of October.

An ideal spot for surfing vacation at Lake Balaton is the Tihany Peninsula. From its peak the view over the lake is always excellent. Tihany is also one of the most beautiful scenic areas in Hungary. Tihany is famous for its abbey church with the grave of King Andrew I and the carefully reconstructed pottery village, holding the charm of past centuries. There is a variety of restaurants offering not only spicy regional Hungarian dishes, but also international cuisine and shop with a wide selection of goods. It will not also be a problem to find an appropriate accommodation option: whether it will be an apartment or even a summer cottages.

Tihany is situated on the northern shore, where the wind is strong. It is quite in contrast with the sheltered south shore, which due to its flat bottom makes it ideal for family vacations with small children.

Those, who want to learn to surf, will find what they are looking for at Lake Balaton. The surfing schools here enjoy a good reputation. Smaller surf boards available for women and children. Wetsuits offer protection against cold water. The average water temperature in summer is about 19-22 ° Celsius. Because of the relatively shallow water with an average depth of 3.5 meters it can be warmed in summer up to 30 ° Celsius!

There are surfing courses available, upon completion of which you will acquire an internationally valid surfing certificate. Equipment for surfing can be rented anywhere around the lake. Children from the age of 8 years, in exceptional cases, from 6 years, can take courses in the Lake Balaton surfing schools. The Kite-surfing is also becoming increasingly popular at Lake Balaton.

In May, at Lake Balaton, the Surf Festival takes place. It is a great spectacle, which is worth seeing. The surf beach in Siofok- is El Dorado for the wind and wave fans. The organizer of the event is Kiteline Sport Club.
