North shore or south shore: which side of Lake Balaton fits your trip?

The simple rule is useful: choose the south shore for easy beach days and shallow water, choose the north shore for scenery, wine villages, viewpoints and a more varied landscape. Many good holidays combine both.

Choose the south shore if beach time comes first

The south shore is usually easier with children because the water is often shallower and many towns are built around straightforward bathing areas. Siófok, Zamárdi, Balatonlelle and Fonyód offer different versions of the same advantage: simple access, rail connections and plenty of summer services.

Choose the north shore for landscape and variety

The north shore is stronger for couples, walkers, wine trips and travellers who want more than the beach. Tihany, Balatonfüred, Badacsony, Szigliget and the Káli Basin bring hills, old villages, cellars, viewpoints and day trips.

Best choice for a first visit

For a first short stay, pick one base and plan one crossing by ferry or boat. For a longer holiday, spend several nights on each side. This avoids rushed driving and gives a better sense of why Lake Balaton is not one single resort, but a chain of different places.
