North Shore of Lake Balaton: towns, views and quieter holidays

The north shore is the more varied and scenic side of Lake Balaton. It is the right choice for travellers who want beaches and lake days, but also hills, vineyards, historic towns and viewpoints above the water.

Who the north shore suits

This side of the lake works well for couples, active travellers, wine visitors and families who prefer smaller resorts to the busiest parts of the south shore. Balatonfüred offers promenades and classic spa-town atmosphere, Tihany adds the peninsula, abbey and ferry connection, while Badacsony, Szigliget and the Káli Basin bring volcanic hills, wine cellars and walking routes.

Beaches, towns and transport

Beaches are often a little more structured than on the shallow south shore, and some places have deeper water close to the edge. Rail connections run along much of the shore, making Balatonfüred, Révfülöp, Badacsony and Keszthely useful bases without a car. Drivers should plan extra time in high summer, especially around Tihany and Balatonfüred.

The shore is especially useful when a holiday should include more than bathing: short walks above the lake, wine villages, viewpoints, boat trips and evenings in historic resort towns. Families should check the exact beach layout before booking, because some north-shore beaches become deeper faster than the shallow southern resort beaches.
