Malom-tó and the cave landscape

Malom-tó is fed by several karst springs. Its water temperature remains a constant 18 °C, so the lake does not freeze even in winter. Old houses and a watermill are located nearby. The combination of water and historic buildings gives this part of Tapolca its own character.

Tapolcai-tavasbarlang lies beneath Tapolca. It has been protected since 1942 and under strict protection since 1982; its extent and its geological, morphological and hydrological values are the reasons for this. The cave is part of an underground system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres.

Churches, Romkert and the town museum

The Roman Catholic church on Templomdomb has a Romanesque window and a Gothic choir with a ribbed vault. The Protestant church provides a different architectural accent: it was built in 1935 and 1936. Bálint Szeghalmy’s designs are reminiscent of churches with wooden towers in Kalotaszeg.

At the tapolcai Romkert, partially reconstructed foundations of a medieval castle can be seen. There is also a wolf pit in front of the former gate. The site thus reveals two different elements of the castle complex: the remains of the building and the former protection of the gate.

The Városi Múzeum presents the history of Tapolca in permanent exhibitions. Its basement houses the Lapidarium, with stone monuments from Tapolca and its surroundings. Recurring events

The annual calendar also brings recurring events to the town: the autumn Pisztráng- és Borfesztivál is held regularly in Tapolca. The Malomtó úszás swimming competition is also held regularly on New Year’s Eve. More landscapes in Northern Lake Balaton

Tapolca can be a focal point for cave landscapes, water and local history. The wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton also offers other distinct landscape and cultural themes. Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. Its quarry face reveals the inside of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago. At a lookout point on the western edge of the quarry grounds, a panorama board helps identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary.

Badacsony offers another landscape highlight within the wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton. The volcanic mountain is in Veszprém County on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, opposite the town of Fonyód. There are trails and panoramic views for hikers; distinctive geological formations are known as basalt organ pipes. Special grape varieties are also grown on the slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. These examples illustrate the region’s diversity without conflating the individual landscapes with Tapolca.
