Kisapáti at Szent György Hill – Chapel, Wine and Hiking Trails

Kisapáti lies at the foot of Szent György Hill, a nationally significant protected natural area. As a result, the village combines a striking mountain landscape with a winemaking tradition and historic sacred buildings. Above the present-day cemetery stands the Szent Kereszt Chapel, which was built in 1244. The restored chapel contains a late medieval altar and fragments of medieval painted frescoes. The Roman Catholic Szent Kereszt Church is also part of Kisapáti’s history. It was built in 1875 for the veneration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. A nearly 4 km circular trail with seven stations in Hungarian and German is available for walks and longer excursions. It passes the basalt organ pipes and leads to the 414-metre-high summit. From there, the panorama stretches from the Keszthely Mountains and the witness hills of the Balaton Uplands to Somló. Anyone who enjoys travelling on foot will find a route that combines landscape, geology and views.

Wine and Regional Festival Culture

A few years ago, Kisapáti joined the Szent György Hill Wine Route. Every year, Kisapáti traditionally holds a grape harvest festival during the second week of September. The Szent György Hill Days take place every April and include a wine competition. They conclude with a goulash-cooking competition involving the municipalities belonging to Szent György Hill.

A special regional sweet dish is Szent György Hill pancakes. They are prepared with walnuts and foam and are often served by local housewives at family celebrations and gatherings with friends.
