Balatonszőlős – Routes, Hillsides and Balaton Views

Balatonszőlős offers views of Lake Balaton and the Tihany Peninsula from the hillsides around the village. The route passes through Malom-völgy to Noszlopy Spring in the gorge area of Szőlősi-Séd, between Farkó-kő and Bocsár-hegy. Route 2 is listed as 12 kilometres and approximately 2.5 hours. It is specifically recommended for photography. At 14 kilometres and approximately 3 hours, Route 3 is the longest of the shorter tours described here with an approximate duration. It reaches Recsek-hegy, at 430.8 metres, and the Noszlopy-Gáspár lookout point. You can therefore easily compare the two routes by time: according to the description, Route 2 takes approximately half an hour less than Route 3.

Route 4 offers a different scale: over 20 kilometres, it leads from Balatonszőlős along marked hiking trails to Nagy-Gella, at 416.3 metres, and on to Zádor Castle. From there, the marked trail leads back to Balatonszőlős. The route’s distance provides a useful guide when choosing a route.

Route 5 is 12 kilometres long and takes approximately 2.5 hours. It passes through Kasza-völgy to the gorge of Aszófői-Séd, which lies between Meggy-hegy, Pogány-pince, Csengő-hegy, and Vásár-hegy. Important for your planning: there is no marked tourist trail along this route. Although Routes 5 and 2 have the same listed distance and approximate duration, they have different focuses: the gorge landscape here, and the explicit recommendation for photography on Route 2.

Church architecture and a local traditional dish

There’s also a specific way to get to know the village beyond its routes: the Reformed Church of Balatonszőlős preserves a Gothic portal with stonework. Medieval windows are located below the windows of the bell tower level. Boat trips are available in the Tapolca Lake Cave, which also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. Its interior exposes part of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago; at the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board.
