Culture from Jókai to the Reform Era

At the Jókai Mór Memorial House, an interior exhibition shows the everyday life of the Jókai family in Füred and the atmosphere of their social life. The Városi Múzeum takes a different approach: in the former villa of a spa administrator, it explores Balatonfüred’s history during the Reform Era through transport, the spa, the Anna Ball and the theatre. These four themes range from mobility and spa life to social and cultural topics, dividing the museum’s content into distinct sections.

The Városi Múzeum building also houses the Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény, with its extensive library. This brings together the Reform Era exhibition and a local history collection with a library as distinct cultural points of interest.

Jókai Mór’s literary work is also part of Balatonfüred’s story: in a villa built in 1870, he wrote “Az arany ember” as well as other short stories and newspaper articles that helped make Lake Balaton known. This literary trail offers a different perspective from the four themes at the Városi Múzeum. Walks and seasonal events

Another way to discover Balatonfüred and its history is to join walks and themed routes organised by the Városi Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény és Kiállítóhely. They lead through the Reform Era district, Savanyúvíz and the surrounding area, and are accompanied by anecdotes, legends and quotations from works about Balatonfüred. Advance registration is required, and a minimum of five people must take part. These walks are therefore an organised group option that you should plan for in advance.

Two seasonal events along the Tagore Promenade bring together food and wine: the Balatoni Hal- és Borünnep takes place in spring, and the Borhetek in August. Both feature food stalls and wineries; at the pavilions, you can taste wines from wineries in the Balatonfüred-Csopaki Borvidék. The different seasons offer a general guide, but are no substitute for checking the specific event dates. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates in advance.

Lake Balaton - North: more landscape and cultural experiences

Other places in the wider Lake Balaton - North destination add to the picture of the region. Boat trips are offered in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also has the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a system beneath the town that has so far been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres. This combines a geological feature with two distinct visitor experiences.

Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panoramic information board to identify the surrounding hills. The interior of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago has been exposed here. Thus, the wider Lake Balaton - North destination offers geology and landscape as distinct themes alongside local history and wine events.
