Three specific themes can help you find your way around Badacsonyörs: the Folly Arboretum, the Szent Antal Chapel and winegrowing. Which of these you want to shape your stay can also influence your choice of accommodation. Would you like to set aside time for a garden stroll, taste wine or learn about a historic building? The information below will help you include these highlights in your travel plans.

The Folly Arboretum as a highlight of your visit

The Folly Arboretum and Winery is located at Kápolnavölgyi út 25, 8257 Badacsonyörs. The 3.6-hectare grounds feature collections consisting mainly of evergreen plants. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. This lets you make it a separate part of your itinerary rather than simply fitting it in as an afterthought.

The graded accessibility information is also useful for finding your way around on site: the paths in the lower and middle sections of the garden are paved and wheelchair accessible. The restaurant and restrooms are also wheelchair accessible. As this information concerns conditions on site, it is advisable to check the current situation before your visit.

Walking routes to the arboretum

From Badacsonyörs railway station, an approximately 1.6-kilometre walking route leads to the Folly Arboretum in about 16 minutes. The route crosses Road 71 and then continues along Szőlő utca, Mandulás út, Arborétum út and Kápolnavölgyi út. The stated route from the Badacsonyörs Kemping long-distance bus stop is around 600 metres and takes about 20 minutes on foot. It goes via Road 71, the passage beside the tyre service centre and the junction of Mandulás út and Arborétumi út, then along Arborétumi út and Kápolnavölgyi út.

The two route descriptions can be compared by starting point, distance and time: in this case, the shorter stated distance does not correspond to a shorter walking time. Plan from the relevant starting point and check the route before your trip; walking conditions may change.

Wine and local history

At the wine terrace of Csendes Dűlő Szőlőbirtok, you can taste wine and order cold snacks to accompany it. Advance booking is required for tastings. Another connection to wine is the family-owned winery on Örsi-hegy: it grows Olaszrizling, Hárslevelű, Szürkebarát and Kéknyelű organically on three hectares. The property has been owned by the Molnár family since 1971.

The Szent Antal Chapel offers a different focus. Dedicated to Saint Anthony, it was completed in 1816. Together with the garden and the wine-related attractions, it offers a clear cultural highlight for travellers who do not want to plan their stay around just one activity.

More attractions in the wider Northern Balaton destination

The wider Northern Balaton destination also offers other attractions that differ markedly from Badacsonyörs’s local focus on gardens, the chapel and wine. Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang; it also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored for a length of 14.6 kilometres.

Another regional landmark is Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, a quarry wall exposes the inside of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills using a panoramic information board; Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. These examples give the wider destination a broader thematic context without replacing the attractions of Badacsonyörs.
