On the south shore of Lake Balaton, to the west of Balatonboglar the second largest seaside resort of Balaton region – Fonyod - is situated. Fonyod has more than 900-years history; in 1082 the name of the place was mentioned for the first time. During the time of Turkish wars Fonyod was a war zone; even nowadays festivals are held annually in the well preserved castles, which are visited by the huge number of residents and visitors from surrounding towns. In the 19th century the first railway line through the village was built, since that Fonyod has became a popular holiday resort and the first holiday homes and apartments appeared. The specificity of this pleasant place is that it lies between two mountains, which have appeared even before the birth of Lake Balaton and from which a magnificent view of the entire lake is offered. If you’ll have an opportunity, you should take a walk to the top of the mountain and enjoy a sunrise or a sunset from there.
The houses of the village are located in a semicircle on the hills. Narrow, winding streets and alleyways make the place look like a mountain village.
Fonyod offers visitors many places of attraction, for example it has the largest port on Lake Balaton with a breakwater of 462 meters. From Fonyod harbor vacationers can go on tours to other resorts of Lake Balaton. At the same time Fonyod is a perfect place for swimming – its 12 km long coastline has numerous clean sandy beaches. The depth in gradually increasing and it is not very deep near the coast, so it is really suitable for a family vacation with children.
Twice a week a huge market takes place at the main square of the village and there are often open-air theater plays, concerts and craft fairs. The village has two galleries with changing exhibitions. “Villa tomb” is really worse visiting. A man has ordered a hotel suite for his first love and placed her body carved in stone in the common bed.
