Balatonfenyves

(4) marks: 1

Balatonfenyves is a small place with a population of about 2000 citizens, located on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. "Fenyves" means "coniferous forest", an allusion to the surrounding coniferous forests, so that Balatonfenyves can be translated to English as "coniferous forest at Lake Balaton".

Balatonfenyves was founded in the end of the 19th century, when the swampy Nagyberek area was meliorated. The driving force for the reclamation of swamp was Imre Szechny. He initiated to start melioration of that land. Anyways one part of the swamp was preserved as a nature reserve. The last station of the railways is a well know spa resort Cisztapuszta.

In a settlement within the marsh area a riding place is located. Even international horse races take place here. Vacationers can hire a coach or book a trip.

The Balatonfenyves resort area appeared in the 30s of XX century, when the construction of holiday houses has begun, when beautiful green parks and a vast beach have appeared.

Even today, it will not be a problem to rent a cottage or an apartment in the shadow of pine trees. At the same time accommodation in Balatonfenyves is very affordable: from ten euros per person per day. The southern part of Lake Balaton is known to be less expensive than the northern and the eastern regions.

Besides swimming and water sport on the lake, many vacationers prefer to go on an excursion to a pumping station at the Berek channel, which was built in 1913.

There is a wide selection of events to visit and take part during summer months: from a gypsy music festival to a rock concert. In addition circus shows occur regularly and Hungarian folk music is played every day!

Balatonfenyves is a place, where active rest and relaxation can be combined together.
It is a wonderful place for holidays!
